Here we answer the questions we hear most often about cachaça. For more background, read our article What is cachaça?
Is cachaça Brazilian rum?
Cachaça is often called "Brazilian rum", and both are indeed sugarcane spirits. But cachaça is a category of its own with a protected origin: only spirit made in Brazil may be called cachaça.
What is the difference between cachaça and rum?
Most rums are distilled from molasses, a by-product of sugar production. Cachaça is made from fresh sugarcane juice, fermented right after harvest, which gives it a fresher, grassier character. Then there is the ageing: instead of almost only oak, cachaça may be aged in many native Brazilian woods such as Amburana, Bálsamo or Jequitibá.
How strong is cachaça?
Brazilian law requires between 38 and 48 % ABV. All FRONTEIRA cachaças are bottled at 39 % ABV.
How do you drink cachaça?
Aged cachaça like ours is best enjoyed neat, at room temperature, in a nosing or tulip glass. It also works beautifully in cocktails, from the classic caipirinha to an Old Fashioned with cachaça instead of whisky.
Which FRONTEIRA cachaça is right for me?
- To start with: AMBURANA, with warm notes of vanilla, cinnamon and caramel.
- Spiced and bold: BÁLSAMO or OAK & BÁLSAMO.
- For whisky and rum lovers: OAK & AMBURANA, the bridge between familiar oak and Brazilian wood.
- Elegant and floral: OAK & JEQUITIBÁ.
- Every wood in one bottle: QUATRO MADEIRAS, our signature cachaça from four woods.
Where does FRONTEIRA come from?
FRONTEIRA is distilled in Minas Gerais, the heart of artisanal cachaça, in traditional copper pot stills (alambiques). Its colour comes only from ageing in wood; we use no colorants. It is imported to Germany by K&V Mercantil GmbH, Frankfurt am Main.
